If the finishing paint is a deep color, contractors may tint the primer to reduce the number of layers of finishing paint that are necessary for good uniformity across the painted surface. Primers are also can be used generally by painting contractors to hide joints and seams to give a finishing look.

What does a primer do?

Primer is a paint product that allows finishing paint to stick better to the surface. They help to bind to surfaces and to form an adhering layer that is better prepared to before the painting coat. Primers can be engineered to have improved filling and binding properties with the material underneath.

Generally, the primer is often used when painting many kinds of porous materials, such as concrete and especially wood.

We believe priming is mandatory if the material is not water resistant and will be exposed to the elements. Drywall priming is also standard practice with new construction because it seals the wall and aids in preventing mold. Jeff Schultz Painting uses primers for dirty surfaces which cannot be cleaned. Depending on the situation, painting contractors use primers before painting lighter colors over existing dark colors.

Primers can usually be tinted to a close match with the color of the finishing paint.

If the finishing paint is a deep color, contractors may tint the primer to reduce the number of layers of finishing paint that are necessary for good uniformity across the painted surface. Primers are also can be used generally by painting contractors to hide joints and seams to give a finishing look.

There may be a maximum time-frame within which a topcoat should be applied over the primer by a contractor after the primer dries, in order to achieve maximum performance.

Depending on the primer, the next coat of paint should be applied as quickly as one day or as long as fourteen days. For definitive answers on recommended repainting time-frame, Jeff Schultz Painting can check the primer label/website, or contact the manufacturer directly.

Recoat time-frame is most likely a more critical factor in exterior application because of the more extreme climatic exposure. This is especially critical in Florida’s hot climate.

No primer was used, causing issues with painting peeling after 1-1/2 years.

When a painting contractor works on your project, you need to make sure they use they let you know if they are not using a primer. An area residential and commercial contractor did not use primer when they are supposed to. 1.5 years after doing commercial exterior work we began having issues of painting peeling. No primer, no caulking was used in the preparation work.

The truth about a primer brand lies within the ingredients.

Some primers cost more than others. The important thing to know about primers is to look at the ingredients.
