Do you really need a primer to paint walls and  what does a primer do?

What does a primer do?

Primer is a paint product that allows finishing paint to stick better to the surface.  They help to bind to surfaces and to form an adhering layer that is better prepared to before the painting coat. Primers can be engineered to have improved filling and binding properties with the material underneath.

Generally, the primer is often used when painting many kinds of porous materials, such as concrete and especially wood.

We believe priming is mandatory if the material is not water resistant and will be exposed to the elements. Drywall priming is also standard practice with new construction because it seals the wall and aids in preventing mold. Jeff Schultz Painting uses primers for dirty surfaces which cannot be cleaned. Depending on the situation, painting contractors use primers before painting lighter colors over existing dark colors.

Primers can usually be tinted to a close match with the color of the finishing paint.

If the finishing paint is a deep color, contractors may tint the primer to reduce the number of layers of finishing paint that are necessary for good uniformity across the painted surface. Primers are also can be used generally by painting contractors to hide joints and seams to give a finishing look.

There may be a maximum time-frame within which a topcoat should be applied over the primer by a contractor after the primer dries, in order to achieve maximum performance.

peeling paintDepending on the primer, the next coat of paint should be applied as quickly as one day or as long as fourteen days.  For definitive answers on recommended repainting time-frame, Jeff Schultz Painting can check the primer label/website, or contact the manufacturer directly. Recoat time-frame is most likely a more critical factor in exterior application because of the more extreme climatic exposure. This is especially critical in Florida’s hot climate.

No primer was used, causing issues with painting peeling after 1-1/2 years.

When a painting contractor works on your project, you need to make sure they use they let you know if they are not using a primer. An area residential and commercial contractor did not use primer when they are supposed to. 1.5 years after doing commercial exterior work we began having issues of painting peeling. No primer, no caulking was used in the preparation work.

The truth about a primer brand lies within the ingredients.

Some primers cost more than others. The important thing to know about primers is to look at the ingredients.

Is Semi-Gloss Paint, Flat Paint or Satin Paint best for your paint project?

Before you buy paint for your project, you need to determine which paint is best for your project.

In Florida’s sunny climate you need to determine when your project is ready to update.

The three most popular choices are Semi-Gloss Paint, Flat Paint, and Eggshell Paint. There are pros and cons to
all three.

FLAT PAINT for interior walls:

paint for wallsFlat paint has a Matte texture and it does not reflect light like a semi-gloss paint. Because it reflects light, it helps hide any interior wall imperfections. The benefit is it helps hide older interior wall imperfections like dings, cracks and wall tape. If wall damage is significant, it is better to repair interior walls prior to painting.
Thus flat paint is the most popular paint choice in older homes. The cons are it doesn’t hold up well to scrubbing. However, many flat paints can be cleaned up with soap and water rather easily.

SEMI-GLOSS PAINT for interior walls:

Semi-gloss paint has some sheen to it. This is an excellent choice for rooms like bathrooms and kitchens. Semi-gloss paint stands up exceptionally well to scrubbing interior walls and regular cleaning. It does not reflect light as well and interior wall imperfections like cracks and poorly patched areas may stand out. Semi-gloss paint has a slippery surface and it is easier to wipe clean.

EGGSHELL PAINT for interior walls:

An eggshell finish has a subtler shine to it, so it’s a great choice if you’re not ready for satin. As such, it offers what you may expect:  It is shinier than flat paint but not as glossy for interior walls as satin, and it’s easier to clean interior walls than flat paint. It is not as easy to clean as satin paint. Eggshell paint is a good choice for living rooms and hallways. Eggshell finishes are not the ideal option where you will need to wipe the wall daily.
Thus eggshell paint is known to be used in living rooms, hallways, bedrooms and dining rooms.

Our painting professionals can discuss whether flat or semi-gloss paint or eggshell paint is the best choice for your walls with you during your FREE consultation. We will help you consider what is best for your project.
